The EU has pledged a voluntary contribution of €10 million to the Adaptation Fund for 2019, the European Commission announced at the UN climate conference taking place on 2-14 December in Katowice, Poland.

This contribution complements the new pledges already made by European Union Member States. Taken together, they attest to the growing importance Europe puts on adaptation activities and on supporting the most vulnerable developing countries in their efforts.

Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said: "Europe is stepping up support to help developing countries build resilience and adapt to the impacts of climate change. We welcome the work carried out by the Adaptation Fund, notably to address the adaptation needs of those most vulnerable, and encourage the Fund to continue its work for scaling-up of financial resources."

The EU and its Member States are the largest providers of public climate finance to developing countries and are committed to scaling up support for the global transition towards low-emission, climate-resilient societies.

In 2017, the EU, its Member States and the European Investment Bank together provided €20.4 billion in public climate finance for developing countries – over 40% of the total provided by developed countries, according to the latest OECD figures. The funding comes from public budgets and is mobilised through European and national development finance institutions.
