This consultation closed on Friday 22 June 2018. Documents remain available for reference only.

Independent Reviewer Dr Wendy Craik undertook a short-term targeted review to reduce red-tape and find practical ways to help farmers meet the requirements of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act).

The consultation period is now complete. The consultation included face-to-face and telephone meetings with a range of stakeholders in seven Australian states and territories between April and July 2018. In total, 78 individuals were consulted across a range of agriculture sector organisations and stakeholders. The Department greatly appreciates the time and effort taken by all those who contributed to consultation sessions and provided information, advice and experience to the Independent Reviewer.

Dr Craik prepared a briefing paper to inform stakeholders of the purpose, scope and timing of the Review. The briefing paper provided information on the methods, and issues to inform public consultation and submissions.

While the Department values public consultation highly and seeks to be transparent, it is under no obligation to publish submissions it receives and reserves the right not to publish submissions on its website that raise legal or other concerns.

There will be opportunities for all Australians to share their ideas on how best to improve the operation of the EPBC Act more broadly as part of the next statutory independent review of the EPBC Act, which must commence no later than October 2019.
