About these documents

Rehabilitation of the Ranger mine site must be completed by the mine operator, Energy Resources Australia Limited by 2026. The Supervising Scientist is developing a series of Rehabilitation Standards against which the success of rehabilitation can be measured. The standards are based on 40 years of research and monitoring to provide an evidence-based quantification of the Environmental Requirements. They are not mandatory but will form the basis of the Supervising Scientist’s advice on ERA’s proposed closure criteria and rehabilitation plans, and the eventual success of rehabilitation.

These standards describe the requirements for:

  • Protection of aquatic ecosystems outside of the Ranger Project Area from adverse effects of contaminants
  • Restoration of the terrestrial ecosystem and long-term stability of the final reconstructed landform
  • Radiation protection for members of the public and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems

The two publications 'Rehabilitation Standards for the Ranger uranium mine' and 'The role of the Supervising Scientist in rehabilitating the Ranger uranium mine' were developed to inform the general public and other stakeholders about the rehabilitation of Ranger uranium mine and outline how the Supervising Scientist will be involved in this process.
