Agency application on ecological sustainability

About the application

The current export approval for specimens taken in the Queensland Gulf of Carpentaria Inshore Fin Fish Fishery (the GoCIFFF) was given on 22 March 2019 and is in force until 18 March 2022. To remove any uncertainty around the description of the fishery, a new application has been received from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on 6 June 2019 clearly setting out the description and extent of the GoCIFFF. It is intended that, if this new declaration is made to approve the GoCIFFF as a wildlife trade operation, its period of operation will be the same as the current declaration (until 18 March 2022) and the current declaration will be revoked.

The application has been prepared to address the Australian Government ‘Guidelines for the ecologically sustainable management of fisheries – 2nd edition’ and to provide updates on the implementation of recommendations made in the previous Australian Government assessment (March 2019). The application will be used to assess the operation of the fishery for the purposes of Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Consideration will be given to:

  • declaring the Queensland Gulf of Carpentaria Inshore Fin Fish Fishery, as managed consistent with the Fisheries Act 1994 (QLD) and the Fisheries Regulation 2008 (QLD), as an approved wildlife trade operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act, and
  • including in the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the Queensland Gulf of Carpentaria Inshore Fin Fish Fishery, as managed consistent with the Fisheries Act 1994 (QLD) and the Fisheries Regulation 2008 (QLD).

In accordance with the provisions of sections 303FR and 303DC of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal.

The call for public comments is open from 18 June 2019 until 18 July 2019.
