ESRC/AHRC GCRF Indigenous Engagement programme

Attention is increasingly being paid to the importance, potential and practice of working in collaborative partnerships with overseas researchers, practitioners, and indigenous communities to ensure local research traditions and knowledge are in-built from the outset and continuously mobilised in the research process. The ESRC and AHRC portfolio of GCRF projects engages with local indigenous communities spanning a wide range of countries and geographical regions which are beneficiaries of official development assistance (ODA). Whilst this engagement has its challenges, as well as importance, we recognise that there are a particular set of challenges that present for researchers in relation to communities that are perceived, or perceive themselves to be, ‘indigenous’.

In order to explore these challenges, ESRC and AHRC invited current and previous GCRF award holders to bid for funding to produce reflective pieces in conjunction with the indigenous researchers and communities with which they were working. 12 collaborative projects were selected, and the PIs and Indigenous partners from 10 different countries (Brazil, Colombia, India, Mongolia, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and Dominica) were brought together at a workshop in Rio de Janeiro in March 2019 to further explore these issues, with particular focus on culturally sensitive knowledge exchange, equitable co-creation and mobilisation for meaningful impact. ESRC and AHRC also commissioned a think piece summarising the global literature from the University of Glasgow. The Think Piece and 12 reflections are presented below.

UKRI is committed to ensuring that genuine, equitable partnerships and engagement are embedded within international working. The ongoing learning from this programme will inform future funding calls and activities with GCRF and other International Development programmes.
