UKRI congratulates recipients of New Year Honours

A number of members of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) community, including two Executive Chairs, have been recognised in the New Year Honours.

Professor Lynn Gladden, Executive Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has been appointed a Dame for services to academic and industrial research in chemical engineering.

Professor Duncan Wingham, Executive Chair of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has been appointed a Knight for services to climate science.

In addition, two members of the UKRI Board have been recognised. Former Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies has been appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and Professor Julia Black, Strategic Director of Innovation at the London School of Economics and Political Science, has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the study of law and regulation.

Rebecca Endean, former Director of Strategy at UKRI, has also been appointed a CBE for services to analysis, research and innovation.

UK Research and Innovation Chief Executive Professor Sir Mark Walport said: “Many congratulations to two of our Executive Chairs - Professor Lynn Gladden of EPSRC and Professor Duncan Wingham of NERC - for their recognition in the New Year Honours. Both have made outstanding contributions to research in their respective fields and to UKRI.

“I would also like to congratulate all of the other members of the UKRI community who have been recognised, including Board members Professor Dame Sally Davies and Professor Julia Black, and former UKRI Director of Strategy Rebecca Endean.”

Professor Gladden, Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, has been appointed a Dame having ‘transformed research in her own discipline and created new ways for academics and industrialists in all fields to work together’.

Having created and led a multidisciplinary department of chemical engineering and biotechnology at the university, she served as Cambridge Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research between 2010 and 2016. Named as one of the Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering in 2016, she was appointed as Executive Chair of EPSRC in 2018 and is a fellow of the Royal Society, of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a foreign member of the USA National Academy of Engineering.

Professor Wingham has been appointed a knight having ‘provided outstanding intellectual and practical leadership of NERC, ensuring that UK environmental science continues to be a global leader’.

He is Professor of Climate Physics at UCL and has served as Chief Executive and then Executive Chair of NERC since 2012. During his tenure at NERC he has overseen the delivery of several high-profile capital projects including the building of the Royal Research Ships Discovery and Sir David Attenborough.

Professor Wingham has also helped to shape the UK’s science contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change through championing the development of the UK Earth System Model, and from 2014 to 2017 was Chair of the UK Collaboration in Development Research, a venture to coordinate across government departments the research funding which is focused on developing countries.
