Introduction

A brand-new bridge is now open on the popular Te Henga Walkway, a coastal trail in the Muriwai Te Henga area on Auckland’s wild west coast.

Date:  01 November 2019

The new bridge replaces the 30-year-old bridge at the walkway, which required remedial work on a number of occasions by the Department of Conservation.

DOC Senior Ranger, Recreation/Historic Stefan Sebregts says the replacement bridge had been planned for a long time. A number of heavy rain events caused sustained damage to the old bridge and led to it finally giving way after a severe rainfall on Boxing Day 2018.

In the meantime, walkers were only able to access the walkway at low tide and in fine weather via Bethells and O’Neill beaches.

“It’s really great to see this new bridge completed and to offer visitors easy access again to the stunning walkway. It is truly a little gem offering spectacular views of the rugged west coast of Tamaki Makaurau,” Stefan Sebregts says.

For those interested in walking the Te Henga walkway, the clifftop walk from Bethells Beach (Te Henga) to the south of Muriwai Beach (or reserve) or part of the Hilary trail.

It is important to check weather conditions, and be aware of the track conditions and the surrounding areas while visiting. Closures and alerts are published on the individual track pages on our website.
