The Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) are joining forces to promote sustainable forest management in Asia. AFoCO Executive Director Chencho Norbu and Robert Nasi of CIFOR signed an MoU on 19 June 2019 at the Asia-Pacific Forestry Week 2019. Both parties look forward to strengthening their common, mutual objectives in scientific research, capacity and institution building on forest landscape restoration.
As an intergovernmental organization aiming to strengthen forest cooperation, AFoCO promotes forest restoration and rehabilitation in support of its Parties’ global commitments in Asia. AFoCO works to transform proven technology and policies into concrete sustainable forest management actions to address climate change impacts. “We are keen to connect and work with international organizations in the region, and to grow together,” said Norbu of AFoCO, pointing out the need to work in harmony with various institutions in Asia.
CIFOR’s Robert Nasi also emphasized the importance of collaboration with intergovernmental institutions such as AFoCO to achieve global climate and restoration goals. He complimented the success of restoration in Asia, especially South Korea, as a model for forest management. “[Looking at restoration works in Asia] the future will be bright,” Nasi said.
AFoCO and CIFOR aim to jointly develop research projects and capacity building to complement each other’s efforts in these areas:
- Customized and locally appropriate reforestation and restoration models in Asia
- Promoting sustainable forest management through forest landscape restoration (FLR), climate change adaptation and mitigation approaches, and other relevant approaches and/or mechanisms
- Forest based livelihood improvement and community-based small enterprise development
