82 Grants Will Support Scientific Innovation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry announced that the Department of Energy will award 82 grants totaling $99 million to 69 small businesses in 26 states.  Funded through DOE’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, today’s selections are for Phase II research and development.

Small businesses that demonstrated technical feasibility for innovations during their Phase I grants then competed for funding for prototype or processes development during Phase II.  In addition, prior Phase II awardees competed for sequential Phase II awards to continue prototype and process development.  The median Phase II award is $1,000,000 for a period of two years.

Highlighted below are selected grants for each of the research and development programs that provided funding for these projects:

  • Office of Advanced Scientific Computing

    • Photonic Memory Controller Module

    • Correlating and Analyzing Network Data through Interpretable Decompositions

    • A Cloud-based Platform for High-Resolution Imagery Management

  • Office of Basic Energy Sciences

    • Wide dynamic Range X-Ray Mixed-mode Pixel Array Detector

    • Novel Low Cost Two-dimensional Atomically Precise Covalent Organic Membranes

    • High-Efficiency Post Combustion Carbon Capture System

    • Single Shot Picosecond Temporal Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy

  • Office of Biological and Environmental Research

    • Portable, Low Power Soil Gas Analyzer

    • Portable Nanowire Platform for Quasi Real-Time and Ultrasensitive Detection of Microbes

    • Integrated Nanomembrane-based Chemical Field Effect Transistors for Groundwater Monitoring

  • Office of Nuclear Physics

    • Accurate Spin Tracking on Modern Computer Architectures for Electron-Ion Colliders

    • Distributed Digital Data Acquisition System with Network Time Synchronization

    • Radiation-hardened High Speed Camera System for Accelerator Beam Diagnostics

Small businesses play a major role in spurring innovation and creating jobs in the U.S. economy.  The SBIR and STTR programs were created by Congress to leverage small businesses to advance innovation at federal agencies. Additional information on the DOE SBIR and STTR programs is available HERE. More information about the projects announced today is available HERE.
