MUNICH, GERMANY – This week, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette attended the Munich Security Conference 2019, discussing global security issues and policies with diplomatic leaders from the international security community.
Brouillette participated in an Energy Security Roundtable where he underscored the United States’ commitment to increasing the European Union’s energy security and national security. He stated that one of the most important elements of energy security is diversity of supply and diversity of sources providing that supply, noting that over-reliance on Russian gas threatens that security. For this reason, the United States continues to oppose the Nord Stream II and Turk Stream pipelines, and commends European allies who have taken a stance against these projects.
With the United States now being the world’s top producer of oil and natural gas, Brouillette remarked the U.S. is now in a position to serve as a competitive source of energy supply to Germany and the EU, and has already begun shipping LNG to ten countries throughout Europe. In addition, the U.S. supports the development of modern infrastructure to diversify European energy supplies through new routes, such as the Southern Gas Corridor, and optimizing access to the emerging global LNG market.
The Deputy Secretary also spoke at the Three Seas Initiative roundtable, bringing together Eastern European officials to discuss how the Three Seas countries can strengthen their collective energy security, economic prosperity, and national security.
During the Conference, Brouillette held bilateral meetings with President of Slovenia Borut Pahor, Head of the Cabinet of the President Dr. Alja Brglez, and Slovenian Ambassador to Germany Franc But; Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin; Foreign Minister of Poland Jacek Czaputowicz; and German Transatlantic Coordinator Peter Beyer.
