LONDON: Today The Climate Group launched a new project which will support ambitious state and regional governments to dramatically increase the number of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) on their roads.

The Under2 Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Project, supported by the Scottish Government, will encourage collaboration and learning on ZEVs between states and regions in the Under2 Coalition to help them meet their targets on greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

The project also aligns with The Climate Group’s EV100 campaign, which connects forward-looking companies driven toward accelerating the transition toward electric vehicles and making electric transport the norm by 2030. It will also work closely with the ZEV Alliance, a network of 14 national and sub-national governments collaborating to increase global ZEV adoption.

Tim Ash-Vie, Director, Under2 Coalition Secretariat, said “Governments in the Under2 Coalition have already made a bold commitment to act to keep the global temperature increase under 2°C and have also shown great ambition on ZEVs. Now is the time to bring these two things together. This peer learning initiative is designed to give state and regional governments the opportunity to fulfil their ambition and to share their experience along the way, in the hope of bringing many others with us on the road to clean transport.”

Under2 Coalition governments around the world are already implementing ambitious policies and programs to accelerate ZEV adoption. Some examples include Queensland recently completing the world’s longest electric super charger highway in a single state, Scotland’s Switched on @work initiative to support companies interested in helping their employees switch to ZEVs, or the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) funding support for breakthrough electric vehicle (EV) charging technology.

The Under2 ZEV Project will provide a platform for these governments – and many more – to share their experience and inspire others to follow. Topics to be tackled include transitioning government fleets, installing charging infrastructure, raising public awareness and building regional ZEV supply chains. The most innovative and successful policies identified through the exchange process will be shared with the network through the Under2 Policy Action Map.

With global electric vehicles sales expected to boom from 1.1 million in 2017 to 11 million in 2025, as they progressively become cheaper than traditional cars, the time for state and regional governments to act is now.
