As the COP24 UN climate summit gets under way in Poland, the Polish Presidency of the negotiations has identified The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative as a driving force in a faster, global transition to electric transport.

Proposed jointly by Poland and the UK, forty governments signed a new declaration on the promotion of Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs). ‘Driving Change Together – Katowice Partnership for Electromobility , which is also supported by forward-thinking companies, subnational governments, cities and non-governmental organizations including The Climate Group,  stresses the need for faster action on electric transport in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, including limiting global temperature rise to well below 2°C.

Recognizing that air pollution from road transport poses a threat to public health in towns and cities, the declaration underlines the economic and social value of shifting to ZEVs and low emission public transport.

EV100 is named as one of five leading initiatives committed to achieving the goal of sustainable transport and development of electromobility. Aiming to make electric transport ‘the new normal’ by 2030, it brings together global companies including Signify, EDF and Bank of America, that have pledged to transition their fleets to electric vehicles (EVs) and/or install charging infrastructure by this date.

Companies can be key drivers of the EV transition, through their investment decisions and their daily interactions with thousands of employees and customers.
Sandra Roling, Head of EV100, The Climate Group

Sandra Roling, Head of RE100, The Climate Group, said, “It’s fantastic to see EV100 recognized as a game changer in global transport systems. Companies can be key drivers of the EV transition, through their investment decisions and their daily interactions with thousands of employees and customers. The higher the demand for electric vehicles, the faster their roll-out, the more costs come down, and the sooner we improve air quality and cut emissions.”

She added, “There’s a way to go before electric transport becomes the norm globally, but the companies joining EV100 are demonstrating real leadership through their own operations and are getting ahead now. By setting long-term policy targets and providing positive framework conditions, governments at all levels can more companies get involved and go further, faster.”

With a combined purchasing power representing millions of dollars, businesses, state and regional governments, and cities have a crucial role to play in accelerating the manufacture of ZEVs, and in signalling an endgame for the internal combustion engine.

26 companies from different sectors and geographies have now joined EV100 and more are expected in the coming days.
