Three more major property companies have joined The Climate Group’s global EP100 leadership initiative for businesses using energy more productively.

Australia’s Dexus, Cbus Property and Nightingale Housing, all signatories of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, are targeting net zero operating carbon emissions across their portfolios by 2030. Making smarter use of energy is essential for achieving this goal.

The companies will implement energy saving measures that lower their carbon impact and boost the bottom line – allowing them to grow more sustainably.

By becoming members of EP100, they join a growing group of energy-smart companies leading by example and setting the pace for climate action in the private sector.

Mike Peirce, Corporate Partnerships Director, The Climate Group, welcomed the news: “With almost 40% of energy related greenhouse gas emissions coming from buildings, it’s vital that the entire sector steps up to reduce its climate impact.

“Putting energy efficiency at the heart of growth strategy makes business sense – it lowers risk, saves money, and delivers on the expectations of shareholders.

“We congratulate Dexus, Cbus Property and Nightingale Housing for their public leadership on the issue and call on all companies in real estate and construction to seize the same opportunity.”

Leading the way

“Dexus is committed to making practical steps to ensure a sustainable future and giving others the confidence to set similar targets,” said its CEO Darren Steinberg, highlighting the company’s dual approach of sourcing renewable power while improving energy efficiency.

Adrian Pozzo, CEO, Cbus Property, said, “These ambitious targets will drive industry change and ensure we provide the best sustainable developments into the future.”

Jeremy McLeod, Managing Director of Nightingale Housing, added, “Sustainability is central to what we do so we are pleased to join other industry leaders to build action on climate change.”

A greener property sector

Under the new commitments, 320 Australian buildings – including major CBD towers – will be net zero by 2030. The energy savings will be significant; the equivalent of the annual power use of more than 35,000 homes.

Romilly Madew, CEO, Green Building Council Australia, said, “Momentum is building across the industry for meaningful action on climate change. Leading companies and organizations know that creating a more sustainable property or community will ultimately create a better outcome for both them as businesses but more importantly the communities they build for.”

She added, “Reducing emissions and energy use across the property sector is driving demand for more renewable energy sources.”

Daiwa House, LandSec and Dalmia Cement are among leading EP100 members also signed up to The Climate Group’s global RE100 initiative with CDP and committed to 100% renewable power.

With a sufficient sense of urgency still lacking from national governments, The Climate Group is calling on businesses in all sectors to go further on climate action from energy to electric vehicles.
