By decision of the court of Morondava, five people, two women and three men were imprisoned after they were caught slashing and burning within the Menabe Antimena protected area.

As a reminder, eight people were arrested for wild clearing the forest in December. These arrests are the result of several weeks of patrolling by different teams from the Regional Bureau of Environment, Ecology and Forests, the law enforcement (gendarmerie and the military) and protected area managers.

A regional coalition composed by environmental actors including Fanamby, Durrell, CNFEREF, MNP, USAID Mikajy, KEW-KMCC and WWF, with local authorities and the regional platform of civil society organizations - FIVE Menabe, has been working for three years to save the dry forest of Menabe Antimena. The findings are overwhelming. Over a period of eight days, more than 800 hectares of land were cleared in the heart of the protected area. In the areas of Ankaraobato, Ankaobe and Kirindy, the land-clearers even held an artisanal gun and a stolen zebu, to name a few.

The involvement of local communities has also strengthened the controls, patrols and sensitizations planned for 2019. New recruits will join the ranks of the intervention teams this year to continue the patrols.
