A first International Conference on Sustainable Blue Economy was held last November in Nairobi, Kenya, gathering 184 countries with Heads of States, local civil society organizations, and international conservation organizations including WWF. The aim was to encourage participants to move effectively towards a sustainable economy that will contribute to the long-term well-being of people.

The conference enabled participants to understand how to build a blue economy that exploit in a rational way the potential of our oceans, seas, lakes and rivers to improve people’s lives. It has also enabled the sharing of the latest innovations, scientific breakthroughs and best practices to ensure the prosperity of countries while preserving the waters and resources for future generations.

The representatives of Madagascar were able to both acquire new approaches and experiences on the blue economy and establish partnership relationship. "It was an opportunity for WWF to promote commitments for economic activities that respect the principles of a sustainable blue economy in the Northern Mozambique Channel seascape and also to support the efforts of our partners such as SWIOTUNA and CNPE, "says Harifidy Ralison from WWF. And he adds "this event of global importance has also allowed to advocate for the respect of sustainable principles in regards to fisheries in the Western Indian Ocean"

WWF, is a key advocate, opinion leader and partner for an effective implementation of a sustainable blue economy in the Western Indian Ocean and particularly in the Northern Mozambique Channel countries. The transition to a sustainable blue economy is a challenge. WWF is engaged to strengthen and sustain the goals of sustainable coastal fisheries, resilient habitats and healthy oceans for the benefit of communities.
