正文(英文)A paraecologist is a person who possesses extensive knowledge about nature, wildlife, and vegetation in a specific area due to experiences working that area as well as scientific education. Working hand in hand with scientists for conservation, parecologists are some of the first protectors of nature in the field.

At the beginning of this year, ten fishermen from Mahafaly, in the southwest of Madagascar, took a course in scuba diving that was conceived of and framed by WWF.  They came from communities that manage their own marine areas on the coastline of Mahafaly. Their training took place at the scuba diving club Atimoo in Mangily, Toliara. They learned how to use bottles of oxygen and regulatory equipment, opening many possibilities for monitoring of the community’s marine areas.

Subsequently, fishermen will be trained to conduct participatory ecological monitoring, which consists in collecting information on the marine environment (reefs, corals, fish, turtles ...). Participatory ecological monitoring with fishermen allows better management of marine resources by highlighting local knowledge. They now work closely with the oceanographers of the Institute for Fishing and Marine Sciences (IHSM) to monitor the coral reef and its resilience against climate change. To this end, documents and a simple manual tailored to the fishermen were created to reinforce their capacities for performing this kind of monitoring. “Combining their experiential knowledge with scientific protocols really improves the method in which they will direct these community marine areas,” explained Gaetan Tovondrainy, of WWF’s marine program.

Fishing activities are of paramount importance for the economic development and food security of the coastal population of Madagascar. Also,  fisheries management, especially in reef environment are subject of special attention by the WWF and the fishing communities. This is to limit the degradation of coral reefs.
