正文(英文)The WWF-Mongolia has been taking systematic actions to save the Mongolian saiga, critically endangered species in the world.  One of the actions taken by the WWF Mongolia is the biotechnical measures, under which the specialists put hays in core distribution ranges of the species. Meantime, the specialists monitor efficiency of the biotechnical measures used the automatic cameras placed in the field. They have found images of the saiga feeding on the hays in several areas and are happy with these findings.
Recently, the WWF-Mongolia has started an awareness campaign for herders, as a part of its continued saiga conservation efforts. This campaign is specific with its content and practicality. A main focus was given to raising comprehensive understanding on the saiga and its values among the local communities residing the region, where distribution ranges of the species co-exist.
In addition to awareness raising, the specialists handed out first aid kits to local herder families in the areas, where winter conditions have become worse. A message to the rural population under this campaign was “interrelationship of human and nature is intricate and local herders residing the region are grass root saiga rangers”.
Under the dedicated efforts made by the environmental community including the WWF Mongolia, the Mongolian saiga population size reached 14,000 in 2014 and their distribution ranges increased by 13 percent. However, its population dramatically decreased to less than 5000 as of March 2017 due to a goat plague disease outbreak.
