正文(英文)Local fishers, the Telašćica Nature Park authority and WWF representatives gathered in Sali, Dugi Otok in Croatia, for a first meeting of the “Transforming Mediterranean Small Scale Fisheries (SSF)”project. Stakeholders have agreed to act together for the establishment of a new, more functional co-management based model for managing and controlling fisheries resources of Telašćica Nature Park. That will help this marine protected area (MPA) authorities to get relevant information when and where to implement fisheries controls, educations etc. On the other hand, the voice of fishers who now act united is getting significantly more important. With scientific sector and relevant Ministries yet to join, this story is about to get continued soon.

Small scale fishers are in the focus of SSF project, which is being implemented in eight different Mediterranean countries from 2017. By looking at the composition of entire Mediterranean fishing fleet, it is obvious that more than 50% is accounted to small scale fishers who use vessels smaller than 12 meters, including various different fishing gears, and therefore are considered more selective then industrial fishing.

However, lack of influence of small scale fishers on the fishery management processes is causing them not be engaged in fisheries policy development within Med as well. This misunderstandings often endanger their livelihoods and even more, endanger sustainable use of coastal fisheries resources. So the aim of this project is to implement a new model for managing the coastal fisheries resources and this meeting was a step ahead towards achieving it. Instead former “top – bottom” approach where administration demanded laws and rulebooks to be implemented at the field, the aim of this project is to establish co – management of coastal fisheries. In other words, that means that fishers, administration, scientist and NGOs will act together towards development of new fisheries policy and management plans.

Project is being implemented at nine pilot sites in the Mediterranean. In Adriatic Sea three different areas have been recognized as thoes with big potential for the implementation of such initiatives: Nature Park Lastovo Islands, Nature Park Telašćica and Velebit Channel.
