Thinking of wastewater treatment does not usually evoke the sights and smells of Christmas. But combining contrasting concepts can produce memorable art. That’s exactly what Sean Porter did when he decided to create a water resource recovery facility out of gingerbread.


Georgia County Develops Specialized Training To Fit Its Utility’s Needs

When it comes to training operators in wastewater treatment, one size does not fit all. Gwinnett County, Ga., figured this out in 2014 when it set a new goal to become a “utility of the future.” After assessing its existing facilities, county staff decided advanced training was needed to equip operators with skills to manage its advanced treatment processes.

When one door closes, another opens, and Rey Davila is living proof. An unexpected layoff from the City of Dallas’ Transportation Department opened the door to a successful water sector career for him and, eventually, two other relatives – his daughter, Jessica Davila, and nephew, Christian Mendez.


Nano Membrane Toilet is Flush with Funding

A “nano membrane toilet” was created in response to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (Seattle) challenge to design an inexpensive toilet for the developing world. The waterless flush system has received yet another round of major funding from the foundation.


WEF Fellow David Zitomer Leads Future Water Professionals by Example

To his students, colleagues, and community, Marquette University (Milwaukee) environmental engineering professor Daniel Zitomer has been a fixture of the Wisconsin water environment profession for more than two decades.

Zitomer, a member of the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) and the Central States Water Environment Association for nearly 30 consecutive years, was named a 2017 WEF Fellows program honoree.
