Water utilities around the world are transforming traditional wastewater treatment systems into resource recovery centers. The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) recognizes these leaders in sustainability and resilience through the Utility of the Future Today program.

This year, WEF recognizes 32 utilities for transformational work in community engagement; watershed stewardship; and recovery of such resources as water, energy, and nutrients. These utilities are transforming operations through innovation and technology while protecting public health and the environment.  

“The Utility of the Future Today honorees exemplify the kind of forward-thinking leadership that strengthens the entire water sector,” said WEF Executive Director Eileen O’Neill. “We are thrilled to celebrate and recognize these utilities that not only embrace but expand water sector innovation.” 

The utilities recognized as a Utility of the Future Today for the first time include

• Beckley (W.Va.) Sanitary Board,
• Benton Harbor-St. Joseph (Mich.) Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant,
• Carroll County (Md.) Water Resources Coordination Council,
• City of Detroit Water and Sewerage Department,
• City of Grandville (Mich.) Clean Water Plant,
• City of Tallahassee (Fla.),
• City of Wooster (Ohio), 
• Delta Diablo (Antioch, Calif.),
• Evesham Municipal Utilities Authority (Marlton, N.J.),
• Fort Wayne City (Ind.) Utilities,
• Great Lakes Water Authority (Detroit), 
• Houston Water,
• Kenosha (Wis.) Water Utility,
• Lafayette (Ind.) Renew,
• Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (Boston),
• Metro Wastewater Reclamation District (Denver), 
• Napa (Calif.) Sanitation District,
• Queensland Urban Utilities (Brisbane, Australia),
• Region of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada),
• Renewable Water Resources (Greenville, S.C.),

• Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (Laurel, Md.),
• Water Environment Services (Oregon City, Ore.),
• Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (Manalapan, N.J.), and
• Western Virginia Water Authority (Roanoke, Va.).

Utility of the Future Today honorees recognized for a second year in a new area of performance include

• Charlotte (N.C.) Water,
• Clean Water Services (Hillsboro, Ore.), 
• Columbus (Ga.) Water Works, and
• Cloud (Minn.) Public Utilities.

Utilities recognized for a third year in a new area of performance include

• City of Fayetteville (Ark.)  and
• DC Water (Washington, D.C.).

Those selected as a 2018 Utility of the Future Today will be recognized during an awards ceremony at WEFTEC 2018 in New Orleans this October.
