Wastewater 101: NapaSan Launches Citizens’ Academy to Teach Residents about Water Services

Word began spreading on Facebook and through local media that the Napa Sanitation District (NapaSan) would be hosting its first citizens’ academy this fall. When the registration deadline arrived on Aug. 15, a total of 28 residents signed up for the free, four-week educational program. Participants spent a month participating in classes on water reclamation, onsite energy production, and the beneficial reuse of biosolids.

From the President: Activating the People–Water Nexus

A few weeks ago, at WEFTEC® 2018 in New Orleans, I had the privilege to become the 2018–2019 president of the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.). I am deeply honored to be given the opportunity to continue in the long tradition of my predecessors to serve the members of WEF by providing you with the knowledge, connections, and advocacy you need to do your job of protecting the water environment.

During my term, I would like to focus on the People–Water Nexus. This concept starts with an understanding of how everyone – not just water sector professionals – is connected to water.

Notable Figure of New England Water Profession Recognized as 2017 WEF Fellow

Growing up in the northeast U.S., Paul Dombrowski had two dreams: sail alongside Jacques Cousteau, studying the ocean while advocating for environmental protection, and play for the Boston Red Sox.

While Dombrowski, a 28-year member of Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) may not have made the National Baseball Hall of Fame, his decades-long career as an expert in wastewater-facility design and operation earned him a place among the 2017 class of WEF Fellows.

Advocate for Utilities of the Future Receives 2017 WEF Fellow Designation

After spending more than 30 years working in the water sector, Thomas Sigmund has become a strong proponent of the value of water and the important services provided by water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). Peers refer to Sigmund, the executive director of the Wisconsin-based utility known as NEW Water, as a “visionary leader” who is “dedicated” to water and “advocates for innovative and sustainable solutions.”

Sigmund’s commitment to water, the advancement of WRRFs, and the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.), earned him the title of 2017 WEF Fellow.
