Travis Courtney, a graduate student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, deploys a sensor to measure the seawater carbonate chemistry variability of Dongsha Atoll, Taiwan.

Courtney is a member of the Scripps Coastal and Open Ocean Biogeochemistry (SCOOBY) research group, which focuses on global environmental change caused by natural and anthropogenic processes, and the subsequent effects on the function, role, and cycling of carbon in marine environments. Data collected by the sensors will help the group evaluate atoll-scale coral reef growth and better predict how 21st Century climate change and ocean acidification will affect the growth of coral reefs.

This research was supported in part by a collaboration with researchers at National Sun Yat-sen University and National Taiwan Ocean University.

Graduate student Ariel Pezner carries a sensor.

Graduate student Sam Kekuewa and chemical oceanographer Andreas Andersson— head of Andersson Lab — deploy a sensor.
