Aviation’s growing impact

With the spotlight on aviation’s growing share in global carbon emissions, more and more people are aware of the impact of flying on their carbon footprint. There’s no way around it: if you’re flying, you’re adding a significant amount of CO2 to the atmosphere. Currently, the aviation industry is responsible for approximately 3% of global manmade CO2-emissions, but without timely action this share could rise to 22% of our carbon budget.

Travel the world and leave one behind

Flying less seems to be the best solution when it comes to guarding our carbon budget. But for those who have international jobs, flying less is not always an option.  Luckily, we have an alternative! At this moment there’s only one viable solution to drastically reduce aviation’s CO2 emissions, and it’s called Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Compared to fossil jet fuels, SAF can reduce carbon emissions with up to 80%, reduce particulate matter with up to 90% and eliminate sulphur emissions with 100%. And the good news is that SAF is already available and can be used in the existing aircraft engines.

World marker leader

SkyNRG was founded in 2009 to develop the SAF market and has supplied over 25 carriers on all continents since. The company is world market leader in supplying SAF. The market is still small but has been growing rapidly over the past years. There has been a shift from single demonstration flights on SAF to structural offtakes from airlines, like KLM who’s operating daily SAF-flights from Los Angeles. Next to that there are structural investments in setting up new production capacity for SAF. This is key to scale the market and bring down the existing premium for SAF, that is still about 2-3 times more expensive then fossil jet fuel.

Outlook 2019

To make the transition from fossil jet fuel to SAF a reality, SkyNRG is developing regional SAF supply chains that offer a real sustainable and affordable alternative to fossil fuels. In doing so, SkyNRG works together with airlines, airports, governments, NGOs and technology players. But to make this into a success, the end customer must be involved as well. That’s why SkyNRG will launch a new international program in 2019 that offers companies the opportunity to fly on SAF and reduce their business travel footprint from flying. We cannot share too much information yet, but you can stay tuned by following SkyNRG (www.skynrg.com) to learn about this new program. Can’t wait? Send a note to charlotte@skynrg.com and maybe you will be one of our launching customers!
