The UK's National Supercomputing Service (ARCHER) holds an annual video and image competition to which scientists using the service are invited to submit their work. Competition entries should highlight the work scientists do which promotes the contribution of ARCHER to outstanding research. This year, Pierre Cazenave submitted an animation of how a hypersaline release of water at the surface in the northern North Sea would behave under tidal conditions. This entry was selected from an outstanding gallery of creations as the winner of the 2018 video prize. 

The research is part of the international Pre-ACT project which is addressing the management of offshore geological carbon dioxide storage (CCS). These early results indicate that the discharge of hypersaline aquifer water as part of pressure management strategies is unlikely to have environmental consequences.
