The Doctoral Training Programmes (DTPs), underpin the UK's world-leading profile within the environmental science community and bring together universities, research organisations and partners from a wide range of backgrounds, including charities, non-governmental organisations, government bodies and industry leaders.
DTPs will equip the scientists of tomorrow by providing the scientific, professional and technical skills that increase the UK's scientific capability to solve environmental problems. Together, DTPs will train the highly skilled workforce that the UK needs for its future as a leader in cutting edge research, innovation and sustainable economic growth.
PML are part of two DTPs. GW4+, in collaboration with the Universities of Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and Exeter, and institutions the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), British Geological Survey (BGS), Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), and the Natural History Museum. And ARIES, a newly-formed DTP in collaboration with the Universities of East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Plymouth and Royal Holloway London, alongside institutions the Marine Biological Association (MBA), BGS, CEH, Zoological Society London (ZSL), British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Earlham Institute, and the John Innes Centre.
PML’s expertise in marine science will again play a key role, with new studentship opportunities exploring the interactions between microplastics and trace gases; modelling the responses of Antarctic zooplankton to climate change; eavesdropping on marine bacterial conversations; modelling the transmission of waterborne diseases; detecting harmful algal blooms using Earth observation and ocean colour; studying emergent complexity in ecosystem models; and investigating if the ocean is ‘short of breath’ due to global warming.
