Synthesis Report for SDG6 in-depth review

In 2015, UN Member States adopted the historic 2030 Agenda, setting universal and transformative goals and targets, and committing to working tirelessly for their full implementation. To ensure that no one is left behind, it will be vital to track progress towards the goals. While a number of UN entities plan to produce regular monitoring reports for SDG 6 – to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030 – there is a need for a report that presents the overview of progress at the High-Level Political Forum in 2018 when SDG 6 will be reviewed in depth.

“Switzerland is pleased to join Germany and the Netherlands to support UN-Water’s SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation,” says Johan Gély, Head of Global Programme Water at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. Switzerland has helped to drive increasing coherence and coordination within the United Nations system, and has also focused on new ideas and ways of working.

Gély acknowledges that while water and sanitation are issues high on political agenda, there are great challenges ahead: “Current water management practices are just unsustainable – we cannot carry on this way”, he says. Some predict that by 2050, over 50% of the global population may be living under water stress, and 45% of the world’s gross domestic product may come from water-stressed regions.

“What is needed is a paradigm shift to meet the SDG 6 and ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. A report like this tackles disparity and will enable countries to get a full interpretation that can help evaluate policy frameworks and development strategies”, Gély adds.
