Harnessing innovation and creativity, Canada is developing our natural resources more sustainably, growing our economy and creating cleaner energy options in our transition to a low-carbon economy. Our government understands that investments in clean technology build a stronger economy and drive sustainable prosperity.

Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, Randy Boissonnault, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Carr, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today announced $22 million for seven clean technology projects for the oil and gas as well as the carbon capture, use and storage industries.

These seven innovative projects — by Husky Oil, Suncor Energy, Proton Technologies, Inventys Thermal Technologies, Carbon Upcycling Technologies, Quantiam Technologies and Carbon Engineering — demonstrate the potential of clean technology in extracting, producing and using resources more cleanly, thus helping create a future that might have once seemed impossible.

These programs are key components of the Government’s approach to promoting jobs and economic growth while improving the sustainability of energy resources as we transition to a low-carbon economy.

“Building on public and private sector investments in innovation, complementary work is underway to reduce emissions from the oil and gas sector. Improved environmental performance in Canada’s oil and gas industry is one of the key paths to a low-carbon economy. Developing and adopting clean technologies will help Canada meet its domestic and international commitments and help maintain our natural resource advantage for years to come.”

Randy Boissonnault

Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre

  • Three of the projects are funded through Natural Resource Canada (NRCan)’s Oil and Gas Clean Tech Program, which provides $50 million over two years to support Canadian companies’ development of clean oil and gas technologies that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • The other four projects are funded through NRCan’s Clean Energy Innovation Program, which provides $25 million over two years for companies to accelerate clean technology development.
