Submission Deadline: 15 February 2018

The availability of autonomous, integrated geophone and digitizer systems that continuously record seismic signals has opened up many new directions and applications in seismological research. Compared to broadband and short-period sensors, these geophone systems are generally cheaper and easier to deploy. These systems can be rapidly deployed (e.g., important for aftershock studies) and have a minimal environmental impact (e.g., important in sensitive areas). The low cost and ease of deployment also allows these instruments to be deployed in very large numbers, known as “large N” arrays, which can reduce or eliminate spatial aliasing by recording a well-sampled wavefield. These geophones typically have a corner frequency of a few Hz and can record single or 3-component data. As a result, they are ideal for crustal-scale, high-resolution imaging studies using both active and passive sources, as well as microseismic event detection/location.

This special section of Seismological Research Letters (SRL) aims to publish research related to geophone array, full wavefield, or “large N” seismology, broadly defined. Studies can include, but are not limited to, instrument/sensor development, ambient noise tomography, active-source imaging, fault zone structures, microseismicity, aftershock, and other environmental seismic signal monitoring.

Individuals interested in submitting contributions are strongly urged to contact the guest editors to discuss their planned contribution prior to submission.

Guest Editors
•    Marianne Karplus, mkarplus@utep.edu
•    Brandon Schmandt, bschmandt@unm.edu

Manuscripts should be submitted via http://srl.edmgr.com under the category “Geophysical Array Seismology” or “Array.” Instructions on how to prepare for the manuscript can be found at https://www.seismosoc.org/publications/srl/srl-authorsinfo/. The acceptance deadline is 1 July 2018. Articles will be published online ahead of print, scheduled for the September/October 2018 issue. The recommended length of the main text is no longer than 3000 words (not including the title, author affiliation, abstract and references). Papers with longer lengths may be submitted at the discretion of the editor.

Address questions about scientific issues to the guest editors or SRL Editor-in-Chief Zhigang Peng at srleditor@seismosoc.org. Address questions about submissions to SRL Managing Editor Mary George at srl@seismosoc.org.
