The Adaptation Sub-Committee of the Committee on Climate Change has a vacancy for a new independent member on its board.

The position, which will commence early next year, requires specific expertise in civil engineering with a focus on flooding, water supply, coastal engineering and/or large system modelling in the context of a changing climate.

Established in 2009, the Adaptation Sub-Committee is the leading independent body that provides advice to the UK administrations on preparing for the impacts of climate change.

It is jointly sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Northern Ireland Executive, the Scottish Government and the Welsh Government and is chaired by The Baroness Brown of Cambridge, Professor Dame Julia King.

The new Committee member, to be appointed for a 3-year term, will be responsible for developing the work of the Adaptation Sub-Committee, determining its strategic direction and providing impartial input into the Sub-Committee’s work.

This includes overseeing the development of the ASC’s 2019 report to Parliament, which sets out latest progress in preparing for the impacts of climate change in England, and a landmark report to Government due in 2021 focussing on the risks to the UK from climate change.

The new member will replace outgoing founding ASC member Professor Jim Hall, who is due to stand down from the Committee after ten years’ service.

Find out more about this role and how to apply (closing date: 14 September 2018).
