The current ARCHER supercomputer

UK Research and Innovation will support the project to deliver the UK’s next national supercomputer, ARCHER2, which was announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond during today’s Spring Statement.

The Chancellor confirmed £79 million of funding for the supercomputer, which will be hundreds of thousands of times more powerful than a traditional desktop computer and will be used to run massive research simulations.

The new resource will be housed at the University of Edinburgh’s Advanced Computing Facility. The project is being delivered and supported by UK Research and Innovation’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Natural Environment Research Council.

It will be integral in aiding discoveries in many areas of research including materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry and climate science.

EPSRC Executive Chair, Professor Lynn Gladden, said: “This investment will provide researchers across the UK with an incredibly powerful resource to pursue the scientific investigations that will help us address many of the challenges we face.

“Investing in science and engineering is a long term endeavour that builds knowledge, sparks innovation and enriches a society. We are very pleased to welcome this announcement.”

The new supercomputer to be installed in 2020 will replace the current ARCHER (Academic Research Computing High End Resource) system which was unveiled in 2013 and is capable of more than one million billion calculations a second.
