UKRI leader appointed to Industrial Strategy Council

A senior UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) leader will join leading figures from academia, business and civil society on a new body to evaluate the success of the government’s modern Industrial Strategy.

Professor Jennifer Rubin, Executive Chair of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and UKRI Executive Champion for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, has been appointed as a member of the Industrial Strategy Council.

The new independent body will measure the success of the implementation of the Industrial Strategy, as well as reviewing its impact.

Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Our modern Industrial Strategy is key to building a successful economy that works for everyone and creating high-quality jobs across the UK.

“This Council gathers some of the most influential figures in business, academia, and civil society. Together, they will share their expertise and skills to measure the progress of our strategy and ensure it is boosting people’s wages and improving productivity of British businesses.”

The Council met at 10 Downing Street for the first time today, to develop its work programme for the long-term evaluation of the success of the Industrial Strategy.

Professor Rubin said: “I am delighted to be asked to join the Industrial Strategy Council. It is a great opportunity to bring interdisciplinary social science to the endeavour, thinking about how we assess and evaluate the range of important outcomes for the economy and society.

“I look forward to working with the Chair and the wider Council in contributing to this important challenge.”

Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said: “The Industrial Strategy Council has a vital role to play in holding the Government to account on our progress in delivering on the ambition set out in our Industrial Strategy.

“I have asked the Council to be challenging on how we evaluate our progress in delivering increased productivity and earnings power across our economy.

“I’m delighted that such a wealth of leading figures from the business, investor and academic community, from all corners of Britain, have come forward to offer their invaluable experience and insight.”

UKRI Chief Executive, Professor Sir Mark Walport, welcomed Professor Rubin’s appointment: “I am delighted that Professor Rubin has been appointed to the Industrial Strategy Council. Her experience and expertise will be hugely beneficial to the Council in its important task of evaluating the progress of the Industrial Strategy.

“Research and innovation is at the heart of the government’s economic plans. It is vital that we draw on our high-calibre leaders across academia, business and civil society to ensure policy and investment delivers real impact across the UK.”
