UKRI marks the centenary of Haldane

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) celebrated the centenary of the publication of the Haldane Report last night, at an event to discuss the principles that emerged from the report, their influence and how they can be applied to today’s challenges.

The Haldane Report was a landmark study when it was published in 1918. It set out the principles that it thought should underpin the government’s use of evidence and formation of policy.

To mark the centenary of the report, UKRI, the Government Office for Science and the Institute for Government held a short conference on 12 December to discuss the report and its significance – and how its lessons can be applied to the challenges of today and those that the UK will face over the next one hundred years.

Speakers and panel members included:

  • Bronwen Maddox, Director, Institute for Government
  • Professor Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation
  • Lord David Willetts, Executive Chair of the Resolution Foundation and former Minister for Universities and Science
  • Dame Minouche Shafik, Director of the London School of Economics
  • Professor David Edgerton, Hans Rausing Professor of the History of Science and Technology and Professor of Modern British History at King’s College London
  • Clare Moriarty CB, Permanent Secretary for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
  • Professor Jennifer Rubin, Executive Chair of UKRI’s Economic and Social Research Council

In this video you can listen to Professor Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive, UK Research and Innovation, Bronwen Maddox, Director, Institute for Government, Clare Moriarty CB, Permanent Secretary, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Professor Jennifer Rubin, Executive Chair, Economic and Social Research Council – UK Research and Innovation.

Professor Sir Mark Walport concluded his opening speech:

“The fundamental principles espoused in Haldane’s report are as germane to day as they were at the end of the first world war – and that it is no exaggeration to suggest that the work supported by UKRI is crucial to the future of a UK that is working very hard to define what its place in the world will be.”

Lord Willetts emphasised the importance of the report, calling it a “crucial document for modern government” that was “part of the process that shaped far more of the research structure we have today than we recognise.” He added: “we should never take it for granted, it is precious.”
