UK Research and Innovation is to sponsor a new exhibition that will put the spotlight on antibiotic resistance.

Announced on 12 October, Superbugs: The Fight For Our Lives will highlight the urgent need to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which, without action, will lead to advanced medical treatments such as chemotherapy and major surgery all but disappearing.

Together, the research councils are working to prevent a 'post-antibiotic era' where we are unable to treat common infections and minor injuries, which have been treatable for decades. The Superbugs exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the vital work the research councils support in this area and to celebrate the research teams across the science disciplines, some of whom are playing a central role in the exhibition.

Going forward, UK Research and Innovation will continue to provide the strategic direction and financial support to enable researchers in the UK to work collaboratively, locally and globally, to control resistance and to develop new scientific approaches. That strategy encompasses addressing patient demand, developing alternative treatments and new antibiotics and reviewing farming practices. But we also need to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance with good communication, education and training.

Superbugs: The Fight For Our Lives opens at the Science Museum in London on 9 November 2017 and will run until spring 2019. This free exhibition will explore the causes of AMR, such as the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, what the solutions might be, and how we can all get involved in preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics.

Keep an eye on the research councils' websites and social media feeds during World Antibiotics Awareness Week (13-19 November) for much more information about our work in this area.
