Toronto, January 31, 2019 –The Aboriginal Program will once again return to the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) 2019 Convention in Toronto from March 3 to 6, serving as an important platform to engage in dialogue around cooperative, respectful and mutually-beneficial relationships between Indigenous communities and the minerals industry—Canada’s largest private-sector industrial employer of Indigenous people.

“Indigenous communities play a vital role in the success of all mining projects, from early-stage exploration all the way through to development,” says PDAC President Glenn Mullan.

“PDAC’s Aboriginal Program supports the creation of positive relationships between communities and companies, and promotes increased participation by Indigenous people in the economic opportunities generated by the sector.”

The PDAC 2019 Aboriginal Program is expected to attract more than 550 self-identified Indigenous people to four sessions over two days:

  1. The Mineral Industry and Indigenous communities: Canadian and international experiences

Focusses on examining partnerships between exploration and mining companies and Indigenous communities.

  2. The Aboriginal Forum

Brings together industry practitioners, Aboriginal communities, and companies to share experiences and highlight the outcomes of working constructively together.

  3. Aboriginal law, Indigenous frameworks and regulatory regimes: Navigating new developments

Examine some of the recent legal decisions, frameworks and regulatory initiatives, as well as key challenges and opportunities that arise for mineral companies and Aboriginal communities in relation to the mineral exploration and mining landscape.

  4. Key issues in company-community engagement and Aboriginal participation in the mineral industry

Features speakers who will share their experiences related to consultation, capacity deficits, agreement negotiation and implementation, and socioeconomic conditions and impacts, as well as various strategies to address issues.

See the full PDAC 2019 Aboriginal Program Convention lineup for further details on each session.
