NewClimate Institute’s Input to the Talanoa dialogue:

“Where are we?”, “Where do we need to be?” and “How do we get there?” are the main questions of the Talanoa dialogue. To help answering these, NewClimate Institute provided a submission to the UNFCCC, summarising outputs from research activities with various partners. (Click anywhere in text)

Side event: Boosting non-Party climate action through Talanoa: Insights from research, policy and practice
At this event, organised by York University and AVINA, analysts of the Yearbook of Climate Action, practitioners, and policy experts share insights on how to bolster efforts in a participatory manner.

Side event: Tracking aviation and shipping climate ambition
The aviation and shipping sectors’ growing emissions must be addressed if the objectives of the Paris Agreement are to be achieved. Should these emissions be addressed at a national or international level or both? And how should progress be tracked in NDCs?

Climate Action Tracker – Country updates
The Climate Action Tracker by NewClimate Institute, Climate Analytics and Ecofys updated its assessment on whether and how countries are meeting their NDCs and whether they are compatible with the Paris Agreement long-term goals. (More info about the Climate Action Tracker on climateactiontracker.org)

Side event: Towards long-term national scenarios: Modelling meets policy
Based on collaborative projects from across the globe, latest model analyses of long-term national scenarios will be presented, and reflect on available current policies, NDCs and best practices towards 2°C/1.5°C. Panel discussion will engage policymakers in a dialogue with the model teams.
 
Speakers: Representatives from global and national model teams in the COMMIT (PBL-led) and CD-LINKS (IIASA-led) projects as well as the NewClimate Institute. Policy-makers from the same countries and negotiators will reflect on the findings.

Side event: Anchoring the climate agenda in countries: Analysing impacts beyond climate change
As countries progress with implementing their NDCs, they face new challenges in sectors as they have to convince a broad set of actors. This events presents analysis on non-climate related impacts such as jobs or energy security as well as SDGs that will help communicate benefits beyond climate.
